We started noticing our children would come down first thing in the morning after waking up and grab the remote control and turn on the TV. They would argue over the remote control and what show should be on. We didn’t like this. They were getting way too much screen time and not enough imagination and play time.
So, We did an experiment in our house the past month. We unplugged the televisions and video games and put them away in storage. The first morning when they came down looking for the remote control they were a little upset. It didn’t take long for that to change. The rest of the mornings after that, they would come down and grab a toy and start playing, or grab markers and a piece of paper and draw. It was that simple. They started playing together and using their imagination much more.
By the end of the month experiment, none of us have missed having a TV. So much so, that we have decided to cut out our cable bill. Cutting off cable will save approximately $50/month for something we don’t even use. When our kids were coming down and turning on the TV, they never watched cable TV shows anyway. They were watching Youtube Kids and Netflix.
We still have Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, along with hundreds of movies on our laptop that we can stream to our television for special family movie occasions.
What is your Internet/Cable bundle like? Do you actually watch cable TV?
